Ductless Welding Fume Extractors

A ductless welding fume extractor captures contaminated air at the workstation, filters it inside the unit and discharges the treated air without a permanent exhaust duct to the outdoors. Mobile fume extractors are a common example.

This approach can simplify installation, but recirculating air back into a workplace is not appropriate for every contaminant or process.

Where Ductless Extraction Can Be Useful

• temporary or changing welding stations;
• maintenance and repair areas;
• workshops where permanent ducting is difficult;
• localized grinding or light fume applications that are compatible with the selected filtration system.

Source Capture Comes First

The suction hood should be kept close to the fume source so the plume is captured before it reaches the worker’s breathing zone. Filter quality cannot compensate for poor capture geometry.

Filtration Is Process-Specific

Welding fume can contain different metals and compounds depending on the base material, filler metal and process. Filter selection should therefore be based on the actual contaminant, not only on a generic efficiency percentage.

When Recirculation Needs Extra Caution

Air should not automatically be returned to the workspace when the process can generate toxic gases, vapors or contaminants that the installed filters are not designed to remove. Applicable local occupational-hygiene and ventilation requirements must also be followed.

For higher-risk processes, outdoor exhaust or additional gas-phase treatment may be required after a professional assessment.

Mobile vs Fixed Extraction

A mobile welding fume extractor is useful for one or two changing stations. For many fixed stations, a central multi-station welding extraction system is usually easier to balance and maintain.
