Multi-Station Welding Fume Extraction
A multi-station welding fume extraction system connects several fixed welding points to one central collector. The design must deliver enough capture airflow at each active station while keeping duct velocity, fan energy and filter loading under control.
Start With the Number of Simultaneous Stations
The important number is not how many welding stations exist, but how many operate at the same time. A system serving ten stations with only four normally active has a different airflow requirement from a line where all ten operate continuously.
Capture Methods
Common capture arrangements include extraction arms, backdraft hoods, overhead canopies and partial enclosures. Capture as close to the arc as practical usually requires less airflow than trying to ventilate the whole workshop.
Duct Network Design
Branch ducts should be balanced so that opening or closing one station does not cause unacceptable airflow changes elsewhere. Dampers or variable-speed fan control can be used where the operating pattern changes significantly.
Central Cartridge Collector
Welding fume is commonly handled with pulse-cleaned cartridge filtration when the application and particulate are suitable. Filter area, media and cleaning frequency should match the total fume load and operating hours.

When Mobile Units Are Better
If welding locations change frequently or only one or two stations operate intermittently, a mobile welding fume extractor may be simpler than installing a permanent central network.
Safety and Air Return
Any plan to return filtered welding air to the workspace should be reviewed against the actual fume composition, validated filtration performance and applicable local ventilation requirements. A cartridge collector alone does not establish workplace exposure compliance.
