Centralized Workshop Dust Collection
A centralized workshop dust collection system connects multiple dust-producing machines or workstations to one engineered extraction network. It is commonly used for welding, laser cutting, grinding, polishing and other dry metalworking processes where several sources need to be controlled at the same time.
The main design challenge is not simply choosing a large dust collector. The entire system must be matched: source-capture hoods, branch ducts, main duct, fan, filter area, pulse cleaning and dust discharge all affect real extraction performance.
When a Centralized System Makes Sense
- Several workstations operate in the same production area.
- Fixed ducting is practical and the process layout is relatively stable.
- Operators need more consistent source capture than portable units can provide.
- The plant wants one maintenance point instead of many small collectors.
- Future expansion can be considered during fan and duct design.
Key Design Inputs
Before selecting equipment, collect the actual operating data for each extraction point. Important inputs include the number of sources running simultaneously, required capture airflow, duct length, number of elbows, hood geometry, dust type, dust loading and operating hours.
The fan must be selected at the required airflow and total system static pressure, not by airflow alone. Pressure losses come from hoods, branches, straight duct, fittings, filters and other system components.
Typical System Layout
- Source capture: hoods, enclosed machine connections or suction arms capture contaminants close to where they are generated.
- Branch ducting: each extraction point connects to the main duct. Balancing is important when several branches operate together.
- Main duct: transports contaminated air to the collector while maintaining suitable conveying velocity.
- Cartridge dust collector: filter cartridges separate particulate from the air stream.
- Pulse cleaning: compressed-air pulses remove accumulated dust from the cartridge surface to help control differential pressure.
- Dust discharge: collected dust is removed through the hopper or dust bin according to the application.
Central Cartridge Dust Collector
For multi-point dry dust and fume extraction, Superman offers the central cartridge dust collector. The system is designed around the actual extraction points, duct resistance and required filtration area rather than using one fixed configuration for every workshop.
For smaller or changing workstations, a mobile welding fume extractor may be more practical than a permanent central duct system.
Selection Checklist
- How many extraction points will run at the same time?
- What contaminant is generated: welding fume, grinding dust, laser-cutting particulate or another material?
- What airflow is required at each source?
- What is the total estimated system static pressure?
- Is the dust combustible, hot, sticky or oily?
- Is outdoor exhaust or filtered-air recirculation permitted for the application?
- How will collected dust be handled and disposed of?
For combustible or process-specific hazards, the system should be reviewed using the applicable local safety and explosion-protection requirements before final design.
