Sandblasting Dust Collection: Abrasive Blasting Extraction Guide

Sandblasting and abrasive blasting generate a high concentration of dust made up of blasting media, scale, coating residue and material removed from the workpiece. A sandblasting dust collection system must handle both high dust loading and abrasive particles while maintaining enough airflow through the blasting enclosure.

Why Sandblasting Needs Dedicated Dust Control

Compared with many light fume processes, blasting can create a much heavier particulate load. The extraction system should keep the cabinet or room under controlled negative pressure, maintain visibility and move suspended dust toward the collector.

Key Design Factors

  • blasting cabinet or room dimensions;
  • blast media type and consumption rate;
  • workpiece material and coating residue;
  • required air changes or enclosure airflow;
  • duct length and abrasion risk;
  • filter loading and cleaning frequency;
  • dust discharge and disposal method.

Pre-Separation and Wear Protection

Because blasting dust may contain heavier abrasive particles, pre-separation can reduce the load reaching the main filters. Duct bends, inlets and other high-wear areas should also be considered during layout design.

Filter Selection

The filter media should match the dust characteristics and cleaning method. Cartridge filtration may be suitable for some dry applications, but the final media choice depends on particle loading, moisture, temperature and the material being blasted.

Safety Review

Coating residues and some workpiece materials may introduce hazardous or combustible contaminants. The dust composition should be identified before the collector is specified. The extraction design should also follow the applicable occupational-hygiene and combustible-dust requirements for the site.

Maintenance Priorities

  • inspect filters and differential pressure;
  • check pulse-cleaning operation where used;
  • remove collected dust before the hopper overfills;
  • inspect ductwork for wear or accumulation;
  • check door seals and enclosure leakage;
  • maintain the fan and drive components.
