Laser Cutting Dust Collection: Application & System Design
Laser cutting produces fine metal fume and particulate that should be captured from the cutting table or machine enclosure before it spreads into the workshop. A properly designed laser cutting dust collection system combines source capture, zoned airflow, duct transport and cartridge filtration.
What Determines the Extraction Requirement?
- laser cutting power and duty cycle;
- sheet material and thickness;
- cutting-table size and zoning method;
- number of machines operating simultaneously;
- duct length, elbows and branch layout;
- dust characteristics and filter media;
- available space for the collector and maintenance access.
Zoned Extraction vs Full-Table Extraction
Many cutting tables use zoned extraction so that airflow is concentrated near the active cutting area. When the machine supports this arrangement, it can reduce the total airflow required compared with extracting the entire table at the same velocity.
The collector and fan should still be selected from the machine’s actual extraction requirement and the total static pressure of the connected system.
Cartridge Filtration
Pleated cartridge filters provide a large filtration area in a compact cabinet. Automatic pulse cleaning removes accumulated dust from the cartridge surface and helps control differential pressure during production.
Filter selection should match the actual metal particulate, temperature and any special process risks. A nominal micron rating alone is not enough to determine system suitability.
Safety Considerations
Some metal dust can be combustible or reactive. Hot particles may also enter the extraction system. The material, cutting process, collector location and required protection measures should therefore be reviewed before equipment selection.
When One Collector Serves Multiple Laser Cutters
A central system can serve several machines when the extraction points and operating schedule are predictable. The design must account for how many machines run at the same time, branch balancing and the pressure loss through the complete network.
