Workshop Exhaust Treatment: Dust, Fume & VOCs Are Different

Industrial exhaust can contain solid particulate, welding fume, oil mist, gases or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These contaminants do not respond to the same treatment technology. A dust collector is designed primarily for particles; it should not be presented as a complete VOC-removal system.

Particulate Dust and Fume

Laser cutting, welding, grinding and polishing typically generate particulate that can often be captured with local exhaust and suitable filtration. Cartridge collectors are commonly used for dry dust and metal fume when the application is compatible with the filter media and safety requirements.

Oil Mist and Aerosols

Oil mist behaves differently from dry dust. Coalescence, drainage and media compatibility may be important, so a dry pulse-cleaned cartridge collector is not automatically the right solution.

Volatile Organic Compounds

VOCs are gases or vapors rather than solid particles. Treatment may involve technologies such as adsorption, thermal oxidation, catalytic processes or other project-specific methods depending on the chemical composition and concentration. The appropriate technology should be selected by a qualified exhaust-treatment specialist using actual process data.

Before selecting equipment, identify:

  • the process generating the exhaust;
  • particulate versus gas-phase contaminants;
  • chemical composition where known;
  • airflow and temperature;
  • concentration and operating schedule;
  • applicable emission and workplace requirements.
