Grinding, polishing and metal finishing can generate a mixture of heavier particles and fine airborne dust. An effective grinding dust collector must capture that material close to the source, transport it through the local inlet or duct, and separate it before dust spreads through the workshop.

The Superman SMGM integrated grinding dust collector combines the workbench capture area, centrifugal fan, cartridge filtration, pulse cleaning and dust collection in one compact unit for suitable dry industrial dust applications.

How the System Works

Dust-laden air is drawn into the integrated workbench collector by a centrifugal fan. Larger particles lose momentum in the inlet area while finer airborne dust is captured on the surface of cartridge filter media. Cleaned air passes through the filters, while accumulated dust is periodically removed by compressed-air pulse cleaning and falls into the collection bin.

The effectiveness of the system depends heavily on capture geometry. A larger fan does not compensate for an inlet or work surface that is poorly positioned relative to the dust source.

The current Superman dust-collection catalog lists three standard SMGM models. These values are catalog data for reference; final selection should still be based on the actual process, dust characteristics and capture requirements.

Key System Features

  • Integrated source capture: the workbench and side/back suction structure are designed to collect dust close to the process.
  • Cartridge filtration: pleated filter media provides a large filtration area in a compact cabinet.

  • Industrial centrifugal fan: selected to deliver the required airflow at the system’s total static pressure.

What Determines the Required Airflow?

The collector should be sized from the process rather than from motor power alone. Important inputs include the worktable or grinding area, capture distance, hood geometry, number of operating points, dust density and the length of any connected ductwork.

For several stations operating at the same time, a central cartridge dust collection system may be more appropriate than individual workbench collectors.

Filter and Dust Safety

Not every grinding dust can be handled by the same collector configuration. Some metal, wood, chemical or mixed dusts may be combustible, reactive or otherwise hazardous. The material and process should be reviewed before equipment selection.

If sparks, hot particles or combustible dust are possible, the complete extraction system—including capture, ducting, collector location and any required protection measures—should be evaluated according to applicable local safety requirements.

Maintenance Priorities

  • monitor filter differential pressure;
  • check pulse valves and compressed-air quality;
  • empty the dust bin before it overfills;
  • inspect the capture inlet and internal airflow path for accumulation;
  • check fan vibration and abnormal noise;
  • replace cartridges according to condition and pressure-drop trend.
