Mobile Welding Fume Extractor for Welding & Grinding

A mobile welding fume extractor is a local exhaust solution for workstations where welding, grinding or light metal finishing takes place in changing locations. Instead of extracting the entire workshop, the unit uses a movable suction arm to capture fume close to the source and pass the contaminated air through a filter cartridge.

This type of equipment is most useful when the workpiece or operator moves and a permanent central duct network is not practical.

How Source Capture Works

The suction hood should be positioned close enough to the welding arc or dust source to capture the rising fume before it spreads into the operator’s breathing zone. The fan draws contaminated air through the arm and into the filter housing.

Larger particles and residual sparks may be intercepted by the inlet or pre-separation structure, while finer particulate is captured by the main filter cartridge. The cleaned air then leaves the unit according to the equipment’s discharge arrangement.

The most important operating point is hood position. Even a high-flow extractor loses effectiveness if the suction arm is placed too far from the source.

How to Choose the Correct Airflow

Airflow should be matched to the hood size, capture distance and fume source. A unit that is too small may not capture the plume effectively; excessive airflow can increase noise and energy use without solving poor hood positioning.

When selecting a mobile extractor, provide:

  • welding or grinding process;
  • material being worked;
  • typical distance between hood and source;
  • number of operators;
  • daily operating hours;
  • whether sparks or hot particles are generated;
  • available electrical supply and floor space.

When a Mobile Extractor Is the Wrong Choice

A mobile unit is not always the best solution. If many welding stations operate simultaneously, if capture points are fixed, or if the required airflow is high, a central cartridge dust collector may provide a more manageable system.

Likewise, processes involving combustible, explosive, toxic or chemically reactive dust require a specific safety review rather than a standard mobile unit selection.

Filter Performance and Maintenance

Filter efficiency should be evaluated together with the actual particle size distribution, filter media, airflow and loading. A laboratory or nominal filter rating does not by itself guarantee workplace exposure compliance.

Routine maintenance includes:

  • checking the suction arm and hood position;
  • inspecting the filter differential pressure or loading condition;
  • cleaning or replacing pre-filter components where fitted;
  • checking the main cartridge and seals;
  • removing collected dust safely;
  • inspecting fan operation and unusual vibration.

Mobile vs Central Welding Fume Extraction

Choose a mobile extractor when flexibility and local source capture matter most. Choose a central system when multiple fixed stations need coordinated extraction through one duct network.
